Book Review: MOON LAKE by Joe R. Lansdale

Okay, I get it now. I'm officially a Joe R. Lansdale fan. MOON LAKE is a slick, intense thriller tinged with the weird and macabre goings-on you'd find in a Southern Gothic (or an "East Texas Gothic," as the case may be). Lansdale's writing is crystal clear, his characters are exceptionally well-drawn, and the plot has more twists and turns than a pockmarked one-lane country road. There's a lot of heart and humor in this novel, too, both of which make the darker moments hit that much harder. This is my first Lansdale book, and it will most certainly not be my last: Joe R. Lansdale truly does have a voice and style all his own, and I look forward to taking a deep dive into his work. As for MOON LAKE, it's a novel I look forward to re-reading, and I can't think of a greater indicator of quality than that.
